Thinking Through the Global Transformation

THINKING THROUGH THE GLOBAL TRANSFORMATION

WITH ALFRED NORTH WHITEHEAD AS OUR GUIDE

LECTURE SERIES WITH

DR. ERIC WEISS

 Dates: Tuesdays, Feb 5th-May 13th, 2008, 7-9pm

Location: 2735 Elmwood Ave., Berkeley

Exchange: $350

We all sense that our planet is in the midst of a profound transformation.  One of our tasks is to think through what is happening so we can align ourselves with the cosmic evolution, and coordinate with each other in bringing the new, emerging civilization into existence.

But thinking through a transformation this vast is not easy.  In the twentieth century, Alfred North Whitehead pioneered a new way of thinking, and articulated a set of metaphysical ideas which can help us a great deal in this task.

In this class, we will begin at the very beginning with a discussion of the nature of thought and language, we will do a fresh examination of what it is that we actually experience, and we will carefully work out a set of conceptual tools in terms of which we can understand what is going on.

Our primary focus in this class will be on how to think metaphysically and cosmologically in a way that is appropriate to our extraordinary moment.  Along the way, we will touch on the evolution of consciousness, the power and the limits of science, the parapsychological phenomena that will be such an important part of the emerging civilization, spiritual practice, and other topics that are of mutual interest to us all.

This class will be challenging,
but it does not demand any prior academic background in philosophy.

Facilitator: Dr. Eric Weiss, received his PhD in the Philosophy, Cosmology, and Consciousness program at CIIS. His dissertation was entitled The Doctrine Of The Subtle Worlds: Sri Aurobindo's Cosmology, Modern Science, and The Metaphysics Of Alfred North Whitehead.

He is now teaching advanced courses on Alfred North Whitehead and Sri Aurobindo at CIIS and courses on the Evolution of Consciousness at Sophia Center at Holy Names College in Oakland, CA, and is a distinguished scholar at the Esalen Center for Theory and Research, where he is engaged in the study of reincarnation and the personality's survival of bodily death. Dr. Weiss is also a psychotherapist in private practice.

Accountability as a means to Sustainability

Posted on Apr 2nd, 2007 by Zayin : Integral Gardener Zayin
I have been playing around with the idea of sustainability within my coaching practice. More and more we are starting to see the need for socially and ecologically responsible business practices. These practices, to name but a couple, can often be found under the umbrella term, sustainable business. This short blog is a consideration of how we might bring the sustainable practices into business and into people's lives via coaching. Focusing on what I term interior and exterior accountability, we can encourage a person to move towards a more sustainable way of being in the world. This can translate to larger systems as well, moving a group, system, or company towards sustainable practices. I suggest above that accountability leads to sustainability. If we are both accountable to ourselves (interior) and to the world at large (exterior), we are accountable to the us, our communities. Sustainability, as I am using it here, can be defined along the following lines. First, everyone's basic needs are met. Plants have topsoil, children have food, governments have an abundance of resources. Second, future generations will not suffer any ill effect do to our present day actions. Third, and most importantly, sustainable work engenders and empowers future generations. We are not simply leaving no trace, we are actively engaged in the process of life, participating in our futures. Community, as I am using the word here can mean an incredible diversity of things. I am trying to be as inclusive as possible. The Kosmos is the limit, so don't be shy. I am using a word that is in common usage, like accountability, because it allows for an easy way into my work. I say accountable, you get it, somewhere. But let's not get ahead of ourselves. If visions of duties, shoulds, and to-do-lists dance in your head, we are a little off the mark. I am pointing at something far more vital. Warren Bennis has been quoted as saying that "managers do things right, while leaders do the right thing." Doing things right is of the utmost importance. Doing what is right, comes from a deeper well, and can be incredibly invigorating. Active participation! That's right, accountability is about mixing it up, rolling up our sleaves and getting sustainable. It is not a should, but rather an I must, I will, what in the world would I rather do?! Of course, managers are often leaders, and leaders are often managers. It is those moments of leading that we are most interested in for our purposes here. Such knowing comes from our most vital and alive selves. When we are accountable in this most vital way, both to ourselves, and to the world at large, then we are acting in a sustainable fashion. Such actions are deeply rooted. They are connected to something much larger than what we often think of as our "self". These sustainable actions inevitably lead us towards community – the “us” we talked about earlier. As we start to see the impact that our interior and exterior actions, we take a more participatory role in our daily lives and our shared future. We start to conduct ourselves in a sustainable way. We do what is right, and have fun, and look out for our collective future. Bringing it all home... with coaching I am working to foster this essential accountability in my clients and the world. I use the word accountability because it is easily accessable. People readily understand the power of holding themselves accountable. I help them to see that they not only want to, but that there is simply nothing else they would rather do than act in a sustainable fashion.

The Participatory Model of Coaching

Posted on Apr 2nd, 2007 by Zayin : Integral Gardener Zayin
When coaching, I bring three basic areas of focus to my clients: education accountability motivation As we work within a particular area of focus, we are building certain strengths, or ways of being in the world. I term these ways of being: transparency sustainability creativity. I am working on what I term, the Participatory Model of Coaching. Education leading to transparency Accountability as a means to sustainability Motivation engendering Creativity This is the basic skill set I am playing with. I am also imagining this working taking place within the context of three particular values (among many others of course). Diversity Community Connection I am calling my method The Participatory Model as I mentioned already. I will be playing with all of these ideas in a series of blogs here on this site. Partially just to get it out, and partially to see what, if any, feedback comes my way. Thanks for playing along.
